Our Fleet – Stories Behind the Names

Every boat in our fleet carries more than just a name — each one has a story. Inspired by aircraft and legends of daring, discovery, and design, our narrowboats celebrate the spirit of adventure while offering something very different: peace, comfort, and the chance to slow life down on Cheshire’s waterways.

The boats, Komet and Spirit of St Louis, sitting side by side in dry dock during their winter refit 2025/26

The Story Behind Komet

Our flagship boat, Komet, carries a name with a touch of history and intrigue. She is named after the Messerschmitt Me 163 “Komet,” a small rocket-powered plane from the 1940s.

Though its time in the skies was brief, the Komet left a lasting impression — daring, innovative, and utterly unique in design.

We chose the name because our Komet embodies that same spirit of standing out from the ordinary. Just like the aircraft, she is distinctive and memorable, but instead of racing across the clouds, she glides peacefully through the waterways of Cheshire.

Where the original Komet was about speed and power, our narrowboat turns that idea on its head — offering guests the chance to slow down, savour the quiet, and enjoy comfort and character at a gentler pace.

She is a boat built not for war, but for warmth; not for urgency, but for relaxation.

The Story Behind Spirit of St Louis

Our second boat takes her name from one of the most famous aircraft of all time: the Spirit of St Louis.

In 1927, Charles Lindbergh flew this little silver monoplane on the first non-stop solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean.

Against the odds, Lindbergh’s daring adventure captured the imagination of the world, becoming a timeless symbol of courage, hope, and the pioneering spirit.

By naming our boat Spirit of St Louis, we honour that same sense of journey and discovery. Where Lindbergh faced vast oceans and unknown horizons, our guests are invited to a different kind of adventure — exploring the quiet beauty of England’s canals, discovering hidden corners, and enjoying the simple pleasure of travel at water’s pace.

Here, the spirit of adventure takes a gentler form: not the roar of an engine or the rush of a record-breaking flight, but the soft splash of water on the hull, the wildlife at the towpath’s edge, and the timeless rhythm of the waterways.
